Instructions Before Surgery
Before IV Sedation and Oral Sedation
- You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight hours prior to the appointment.
- You may take medications if needed with small sips of water, but limit this to just enough water to swallow the medications.
- If you take routinely take oral medications, please check with Dr. Dyke prior to your surgery for instructions.
- No illicit drug use prior to surgery. These will interfere with the sedation medications and may result in your surgery being canceled or aborted.
- Marijuana cannot be used for 1 week prior to IV sedation.
- A responsible adult must accompany you to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive you home.
- Do not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
- If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, fever, or cough, please notify our office
ATTIRE
- Short sleeve shirt.
- No flip flops. Shoes must have support or a strap behind the heel.
- Jewelry must be removed before surgery.
- Nail polish can interfere with our monitors and it is helpful if you are able to remove it before surgery, at least from your index fingers.
Not having IV sedation?
The following instructions apply to all procedures, including Nitrous anesthesia, if you are NOT having IV sedation.
- No dietary restrictions. Eat & drink as you normally would.
- You are not required to have an escort & you may drive yourself after the procedure, even after receiving Nitrous Oxide.
- Take daily medications as you normally would, unless instructed not to by Dr. Dyke.
Smoking
Smoking can interfere with wound healing and increase infection, dry socket, and the risk of the procedure failing.
- Do not smoke for 2 weeks before & 2 weeks after surgery.
- If your surgery is scheduled in less than 2 weeks then stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
